It’s that time of the year again, as the summer holidays draw to a close and the long-awaited start date to the new term is fast approaching. Amid all the chaos that comes with the back to school rush – mysteriously disappearing PE kits, damaged stationary and ill-fitting school uniforms; it can be easy to feel that the back to school list is unmanageable. We’ve put together a simple checklist of the essentials for you to consider, so you can enjoy a stress-free transition back.

 

1. School Supplies

Whilst in Primary school it’s likely that schools will recommend certain products for your child to fit with the teaching methods they use or even supply your child with all the stationary and books that they require. Ultimately, the items your little ones will require will depend on their age and school year – especially once they make the leap to secondary school, they may be expected to bring in their own supplies.

  • Pens, writing pencils as well as coloured
  • Lined notebooks – If your school permits it's a great idea to cover exercise books with a plastic shield to protect from any spills and to prevent ripping or even jazzing them up with some stickers!
  • Ruler
  • Rubber
  • Highlighters 
  • Pencil sharpener
  • Glue stick
  • Pencil case
  • Small umbrella for their coat pocket
  • Hand wipes or sanitiser
  • Spare dinner money or bus fare
  • Spare hairband
  • Sun lotion if it’s sunny
  • Home address and any relevant contact numbers
  • Tissues

 

 2. Uniform and PE Kit 

It's that time again! Whilst it may seem not long ago you were only just buying school uniforms, it's time for a wardrobe refresh. Here are our recommendations for your shopping list: 

  • Polo shirts or button-downs (x3 - x5)
  • Jumpers or cardigans (x2)
  • Boys – trousers(x2), shorts (x2)
  • Girls – pinafores/skirts/trousers (x2) (depending on their preference)
  • Belt
  • Shoes
  • Socks
  • Lightweight waterproof coat
  • Summer hat
  • Heavier winter coat
  • Woolly hat, scarf and gloves
  • Wellies

 

PE Kit

  • PE bag
  • Gym plimsolls or trainers
  • Shorts
  • T-shirt or Polo-shirt
  • Tracksuit for cold weather
  • Spare pair of socks 
  • Swimming kit or other sports kit (if required)
  • Hair tie for children with longer hair
  • Water bottle

 

 3. Essential Extras

  • Rucksack 
  • Lunchbox and bottle
  • Name labels
  • Studs for piercings
  • Older children may need a notebook and folders to hold their work
  • Music bag/musical instruments e.g. recorder, violin
  • Sport clothing or equipment e.g. football boots
